IICA is an accepted course provider in the TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety Program and TÜV Rheinland will award qualified participants who pass the exam at the end of the course a FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland) certificate.
The course emphasises the actions you need to take to comply with the functional safety standard AS IEC 61511 Ed. 2. It provides detailed insights and fundamental understanding of functional safety concepts, industry standards and the methodologies used to determine, implement and maintain safety integrity levels (SILs) in safety instrumented systems (SIS) used in the process industries.
The course is suitable for:
- Automation and control design & maintenance engineers and safety and risk engineers with some experience in SIS.
- Engineers from non-process industries with experience in functional safety in their discipline (e.g. machine protection, aviation, rail) and who are seeking an understanding of how functional safety is applied in the process industries. The course is not intended to provide education on functional safety for non-process industry applications, though many of the principles are transferrable.
- Engineers who do not satisfy the experience requirements for the FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland) certificate, but who are looking for an understanding of functional safety principles and practice. The certificate will not be awarded until sufficient experience is gained.
The course is not suitable for recent graduates or tradespeople with limited experience. This course does not provide training in standards.
Course Outline
The primary aim of the course is to equip all participants with a practical understanding of AS IEC 61511 such that they can understand and participate in those lifecycle activities relevant to their role. It is not intended that by itself the course (including successful completion of the examination) is sufficient to allow successful candidates to lead lifecycle activities unsupervised, but it does provide a foundation for development into these roles or for fulfilment of these roles by individuals already having sufficient pre-course experience.
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Participate effectively in LOPA and other SIL determination studies
- Determine whether the design of a safety instrumented function (SIF) meets the required SIL
- Select a SIF architecture that both meets the required SIL and minimises spurious trips
- Select SIF components to meet the target SIL for that SIF
Course Facilitator: Peter Kroon FSExp (TÜV Rheinland)
Led by Peter Kroon, a seasoned functional safety professional, the course blends certification rigor with real-world insights that only an experienced practitioner can provide. Peter Kroon has worked in a variety of industries including process, oil and gas, mining, and manufacturing for over 30 years. This has provided Peter with a broad range of experiences in how safety is managed across industries. In the past 15 years Peter has specialised in the safety and reliability aspects of projects. Peter has been presenting Functional Safety around the world since 2015. Peter is a member of the Standards Australia subcommittee responsible for the Functional Safety Standards AS 61508 and AS IEC 61511 and also a member of the committee responsible for the Safety of Machinery standards, the AS4024 series.

Requirements
To obtain the FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland) certificate the following is required:
- Proof of at least 3 years of practical business experience in any application are of Functional Safety.
- Engineer degree of a University or University of Applied Science, Polytechnic etc. (Bachelor's, Master's or other) or for SIS and PH&RA trainings only: equivalent engineer level responsibilities status confirmed by employer in a reference letter.
- Participation in the complete training.
- Passing of exam.
Persons, who do not have the according business experience may participate in the training as well as the exam. If they pass the exam successfully the FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland) certificate will be issued to them as soon as the necessary 3 years of business experience in functional safety are achieved. Participating in the exam only will not grant issue of the FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland) certificate.
FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland) Certificate
The FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland) certificate will be sent in electronic form as pdf-file by email to each certificate holder.
The FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland) certificate confirms that:
- the person has participated continuously in a training of the TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety Program concerning a specified topic,
- has successfully passed the final exam of this training,
- has obtained specified knowledge, which he can integrate to his daily work,
- has obtained the title "FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland)" concerning the specified topic within the TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety Program.
Validity
The certificate is valid for 5 years.
